I was on a forum today when I noticed the word 'fibromyalgia' pop up. Fibromyalgia and I are friends from way back. In fact it's about nine years now but we have lost touch over the past few years and to be honest I can't really say I have missed him. So curiosity had me look at the thread which had a treatment regimine with which I was not familiar. So I thought it might be time to find out what is going on these days in the world of this debilitating hidden disability and share it with others.
So how did fibromyalgia and I meet? In a car accident in late 1999. My mother was driving and I was in the rear passenger seat directly behind her. We were stationary, waiting to turn into a side street across traffic when someone rear ended us at 50-60km/h (31-37m/h). Both my mother and I sustained whiplash injuries, over time the pain never went away nor the fatigue that was initially associated with 'post traumatic stress'. It took about three years of treating an unknown condition before we were diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
The statistics in Australia, which I have no idea on how the Arthritis foundation collects them, are that about one third of those diagnosed get worse, one third stay the same and one third get better. I am very lucky to be in the latter third and abundantly blessed to be healed comlpetely. I wish I could just give those people out tere a magic answer to how I found healing but it was many years of hard work and deperately trying to 'listen' to my body.
For me the journey to healing involved all aspects of my life - my diet, my routines, curbing my A-type personality, my relationships with others and my spiritual life - my relationship with God. The common thread in that journey to healing was that healing began and continued whilst I looked at the whole of me not just the symptom affected parts.
On the 16th of October 2005 I found complete healing and yes, I look back from time to time but without the pain in my neck and shoulders as I do so. I still oddly remember thankfully praying in the midst of my journey that God had removed my memory of what it felt like to be without pain. (Crazy notion perhaps, I know). But reaching acceptance that some things can't be changed, including the past, meant that I could once again move forward with hope. As such, may this day be filled with hope for you also.
