Just too fast for me with Math-U-See
Sir Sonic is all to quick for me. To give some context - almost two years ago we bought him the Math-U-See Primer because he was curious in the blocks used in the curriculum at a home education conference. He was three at the time. I am not sure when he actually started the book from the top of my head but he worked at his own pace and in the final stages he was doing three or four units a week to get it finished after months of not opening the cover.
Today he was ready for Test 4 (testing Unit 4) in Math-U-See Alpha. He proceeded to complete it and after looking at his results I flipped the page. I commented that I believed he know how to do the next test (for Unit 5) and asked him what he thought. With a nod of agreement I offered that if he completed Test 5 with full-marks then he could skip Unit 5. He jumped at the offer and within thirty minutes had completed Tests 4 through to 7 and got himself out of 18 pages of bookwork.
With this in mind, Sir Sonic has now completed 7 out of 30 units towards completing Year 1 Mathematics in 20 days. Current projected completion date is August/September 2009. Equating to the end of Term Three of Reception/Prep if he attended mainstream school. Crazy, eh?
What an amazing effort, and he's only five now - right? Well done, Sir Sonic!
My daughter is currently studying towards her year 10 certificate, but we are thinking that we'll get her to complete the academic, so that she doesn't complete school at 14. :P
